Sententiae is one of Ukraine’s leading journals in the history of philosophy. It was founded in 2000 by the Modern philosophy’s research group (Pascalian Society). From the outset, it has been published as an academic journal of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities at Vinnytsia National Technical University. The journal is open access, adheres to the principles of double-blind peer review and no publication fees for authors, and has been indexed in the international Scopus database since 2015. Today, its development and activities are supported by the Sententiae Community.
Since its foundation, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief has been Professor Oleh Khoma, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences and co-founder of Sententiae Community. Under his leadership, Sententiae has become one of the centers for the development of contemporary scholarship in the history of philosophy in Ukraine, promoting high standards of academic integrity, a strong culture of philosophical translation, careful engagement with primary sources, and methodologically rigorous research in the history of philosophy. To a large extent, the intellectual environment that later developed into Sententiae Community took shape around the journal.
Today, the journal continues to serve not only as an academic publication but also as an important part of the Community’s research infrastructure. Its pages feature contemporary research in the history of philosophy, materials on the history of Ukrainian and European philosophy, studies in philosophical translation, archival manuscripts, terminology, and other areas that contribute to the development of contemporary scholarship in the history of philosophy in Ukraine.
The Student Society for Oral History of Philosophy is a student research initiative conceived in late 2016, with its systematic activities beginning in 2017. The Society combines professional learning with work on projects in the history of philosophy aimed at producing substantial scholarly results.
The Society’s research is based on dialogical forms of reflection, particularly the methods of oral history of philosophy. Over the years, it has created a corpus of historico-philosophical sources, carried out a number of projects on the history of Ukrainian, European, and American philosophy, and developed its own research methodology.
The Society develops with the support of the journal Sententiae, the Department of History of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the H. S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. For many participants of the Community, its projects have provided their first experience of professional research. In this sense, the Society is not only a research group but also a school in which a new generation of Ukrainian philosophers takes shape, learning to combine high academic standards with innovative research of their own and responsibility for the development of contemporary Ukrainian philosophy.
The Archivum Sententiarum Research and Archival Center was founded in 2024 by the Sententiae journal and the Department of Philosophy and Humanities at Vinnytsia National Technical University, with the support of Sententiae Community and in cooperation with the H. S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Center conducts systematic research on the history of Ukrainian philosophy, creates new historico-philosophical sources, and develops the infrastructure needed to work with them.
The Center’s activities encompass four interconnected areas:
- I. Archival work and digital infrastructure – identifying, describing, digitizing, systematizing, and providing public access to sources.
- II. Research programs – conducting long-term projects on the history of Ukrainian philosophy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and publishing their results in academic journals and other scholarly publications.
- III. Professional development of researchers – gradually involving researchers in increasingly complex forms of work, from archival description and source analysis to independent research, preparation of academic publications, and management of individual projects.
- IV. Public communication – creating open digital resources, educational materials, seminars, public lectures, and media projects.
In this way, the Center brings together fundamental research, the development of research infrastructure, the training of a new generation of researchers, and open communication with the wider public.
